This is part two of our back up doula series. Over the next few months, we are sharing a bit more about who each of our back up doulas are so that you can get to know them and love them as much as we do.

Megan is a certified birth doula and mother of three. She believes that pregnancy and birth are a woman’s passage to becoming a mother and can be one of the most life changing events in her life, both for her and for those closest to her. She is honoured to have the privilege to be present for such a transformative time in a family’s life.

Why did you become a doula?

I feel like being a doula just fell into my lap. I came across what a doula was while on the internet one day. When I first learned of the role of a doula it immediately resonated with me; I was amazed that there was a job that so perfectly matched me. As soon as I learned that being a doula was a thing, I signed up for the next doula training. That weekend I found a job that is now my passion. I haven’t looked back since.

What is your favourite thing about being a doula?

Can I say everything!? There is nothing like birth to bring out the real in people. I get to witness such intimate real-life moments. It is a joy for me to get to know families on such a deep level and support them through such a huge transition, it never gets old and I am always so deeply honoured and humbled that people welcome me along with them at such an important time in their lives.

If you weren’t a doula what would you be doing instead?

This work has become a big part of my identity, I feel like a piece of me would be missing if I were not doing it. If I were to branch out and do something else it would be in the same field - midwife, lactation consultant etc.

What is your favourite thing to do when you aren’t doula-ing?

Spending time with family and friends, most of all my husband and our three children.

What is your favourite book/ movie/ band/ song? Why?

I love the movie Dirty Dancing, I’m not sure why. I have watched it so many times and never get sick of it.

What is your favourite thing to do in Calgary? Why?

I was born and raised in Calgary so I have spent a lot of time in and around Calgary and have many favourite places to be. This summer my family and I found a new place, Granary Road. It is a great place to spend the day with the kids outside at the park and nice to shop in the market and bring some groceries home at the end of the day.

What other fun quirky things would you like to share about yourself?

I have found that doula work has complimented some of the other things I love doing. I love photography and anything artsy. I have been able to work this into my services as a doula through maternity, birth and newborn photography, belly casting, and creating keepsakes for families.

Was Megan your doula? Are you also a home grown Calgarian with a favorite spot? Tell us about it!
