You Deserve A Doula. You Deserve A Back Up Too. Part III.

This is part three of our back up doula series. Over the next few months, we are sharing a bit more about who each of our back up doulas are so that you can get to know them and love them as much as we do.

(Did you miss Part I or Part II?)

“A calm, watchful, loving presence protects the fragile harmony of birth" – Pam England. This is Mary-Lou Crossley's motto. She believes in creating a warm and safe environment for everyone involved in the birth. Mary-Lou is a DONA International certified birth doula, trained postpartum doula, and is an active member of the Calgary Doula Association.

Why did you become a doula?

I became a doula because I have a passion for assisting and encouraging women and their partners through all levels of parenthood. I love all things about birth and young families.

What is your favourite thing about being a doula?

My favorite thing about being a doula is witnessing the miracle of birth and seeing firsthand how a mother and child instinctively connect. A woman’s body is perfectly designed to grow, birth, and nurture her baby, and in turn infants instinctively respond to their mother.

If you weren’t a doula what would you be doing instead?

I have had several interesting careers throughout my life. I was a teacher for many years, worked at a retreat centre and a radio station, and have been an executive administrator to some very successful managers. However, being a doula and supporting women as they grow into their role as mother has by far been the most fulfilling. At this point in my life I can’t imagine doing anything else.

What is your favourite thing to do when you aren’t doula-ing?

When I am not doula-ing my heart is most happy when I am spending time with my first grandchild. He was born this summer and he is such a delight.

What is your favourite book/ movie/ band/ song? Why?

Right now I am listening to the Boney M. Christmas Album. I love pulling out that album every year at Christmas time.

What is your favourite thing to do in Calgary? Why?

Honestly, one of my favorite places in Calgary is Higher Ground Café in Kensington. It has such a vibrant atmosphere and diverse collection of people. I can sit for hours just reading a book and people watching.

What other fun quirky things would you like to share about yourself?

My three adult daughters are my best friends. I loved everything about being a mom and as a family one of our favorite activities was playing cards and board games. Now that my children are grown we still enjoy gathering around the table, talking and laughing as we play one card game after another. Their little ones will grow up, as their mothers did, on our laps as we play games and simply enjoy each other.

Was Mary-Lou your doula? Do you also love family game night? Tell us about it!
