You Deserve A Doula. You Deserve A Back Up Too. Part IV.

This is part four of our back up doula series. Over the next few months, we are sharing a bit more about who each of our back up doulas are so that you can get to know them and love them as much as we do.

Jacquie is a trained birth doula, DONA International certified postpartum doula, certified lactation educator, and breastfeeding counsellor. She is the treasurer of the Calgary Doula Association. She is honoured to be able to witness the birth of babies and the wonder of motherhood.

“Birth is not only about making babies. Birth is about making mothers - strong, competent, capable mothers who trust themselves and know their inner strength." - Barbara Katz Rothman

Why did you become a doula?

I had never heard of a doula until I met a few doulas at a conference I attended. After speaking with them I knew that doula work was what I was meant to be doing. That was 9 years ago and I haven’t looked back!

What is your favourite thing about being a doula?

I love to see mom and their partner feel empowered – both in birth and once baby/babies are born. It is such an honor to spend time with them and see their confidence in parenting and the love for each other and baby grow. There is definitely an element of selfishness in there too – I learn something new with each family that I work with.

If you weren’t a doula what would you be doing instead?

I can’t really imagine doing anything differently, but I imagine it would be something similar to doula work – perhaps with the elderly population. I am a nurturer at heart.

What is your favourite thing to do when you aren’t doula-ing?

Be in the mountains or outside. I like to hike, cycle, x-country ski, downhill ski – anything outdoors.

What is your favourite book/ movie/ band/ song? Why?

I don’t watch too many movies and don’t seem to have a lot of time to read anything other than books on birth, babies and breastfeeding!

What is your favourite thing to do in Calgary? Why?

Again – be outside. I like to walk or bike along the paths in Fish Creek Park.

What other fun quirky things would you like to share about yourself?

I live with my two daughters – both grown up now. I feel very lucky to be so close to them and spend as much time as possible with them.

Was Jacquie your doula? Do you love spending time outside too? Tell us about it!
